Referrer and friend rewards
Every Soreto campaign runs on two separate rewards, not one. Understanding the difference between them is the first thing to get right before you set up a campaign, because the wizard treats them as two independent configurations rather than one shared setting.
The two reward slots
- Referrer reward. This is what your existing customer gets when they successfully refer someone. It's the incentive for sharing in the first place — the thing that makes an existing customer want to send their referral link to a friend.
- Friend reward. This is what the new customer gets for using that referral link. It's the incentive on the receiving end — the discount that makes a friend who's never bought from you before want to complete their first order.
These two rewards don't have to look alike, and in practice they often don't. A common pattern is a smaller reward for the referrer (since they're already a customer) and a slightly more generous one for the friend (since it's a first-purchase incentive), but Soreto doesn't enforce any particular relationship between the two — you decide both independently.
Where you configure them
Both rewards are set up in the same place: the campaign wizard's first step, Campaign Setup, under the "Reward structure" section. For each side — referrer and friend — you set:
- A discount percentage.
- A discount code for that reward.
You don't need to do anything in Shopify's own Discounts admin to make these work. Each reward you configure is backed by a real Shopify discount that Soreto creates and applies automatically when you launch the campaign. If you're using a single (evergreen) code, the exact code string you type is what ends up live in Shopify. If you're using a rotating pool, what you type is a code prefix rather than the final code — Soreto appends extra characters to generate each unique code in the pool, so the live codes won't match your input verbatim (see Discount Codes: Single vs. Rotating for more on this). Either way, you can skip setting up discounts by hand in Shopify Admin entirely; the wizard is doing that work for you.
Alongside the percentage and code, each reward also has a type of discount code — either a single reusable code or a rotating pool of unique, single-use codes. That choice is a separate setting from the percentage and code string themselves, and it changes how you should think about reward capacity and tracking. It's covered in full in Discount Codes: Single vs. Rotating (/help/shopify/setting-up-rewards/discount-codes-single-vs-rotating/).
Changing rewards after launch
Reward structure is something you set once, at campaign creation, in Campaign Setup. That doesn't mean it's locked forever, though — you can change it later by editing the campaign. Clicking "Edit" on an existing campaign reopens the same wizard, pre-filled with its current values, so you can adjust the referrer or friend reward the same way you set it up originally. The mechanics of the edit flow itself — what changes and what doesn't when you reopen an existing campaign — are covered in Creating & Managing Campaigns (/help/shopify/creating-and-managing-campaigns/).
Common questions
- Can the referrer and friend reward be different percentages? Yes. They're configured completely independently in the wizard — there's no requirement that they match, and no setting that forces one to mirror the other unless you choose to keep them the same yourself.
- What happens to existing rewards if I edit a live campaign's reward structure? It depends on whether you change the code type. If you keep the same type (evergreen stays evergreen, or rotating stays rotating) and just change the percentage or dates, that updates the same underlying Shopify discount in place — codes already issued keep working, and (since a rotating pool's codes all share one underlying discount value) the new percentage applies to any of its codes that haven't been redeemed yet too. If you switch types — evergreen to rotating, or the reverse — Soreto creates a brand-new discount rather than converting the old one, and the old discount is left behind, inactive, in your Shopify Admin rather than being cleaned up automatically.
